the stone powerhouse metabolic complex
What is metabolic conditioning?
A lot of people have questions about exactly what metabolic conditioning is. Yes, metabolic conditioning does have to do with burning fat; however, in order to truly understand what metabolic conditioning is, you have to understand metabolism and the role it plays in the body.
What is metabolism?
Metabolism is the physical and chemical processes that take place in an organism; in other words, it is what produces energy for the tissues of your body to use. One of the major things metabolism is responsible for is converting food to energy to be used by the body as building blocks for proteins, carbs, etc. Furthermore, metabolism also helps with the elimination of nitrogenous waste. The speed at which these chemical processes happen in the body is referred to as your metabolic rate. The faster your metabolic rate/output is, the lower your risk of gaining weight, because you're able to burn calories while doing everyday activities of the body, such as resting. However, metabolism is also responsible for creating new muscle tissue and repairing damaged muscle tissue, which means not only a faster recovery time doing physical activity, but also a faster recovery/healing duration after surgical procedures.
Types of metabolic activity
The main two types of metabolic activity that take place are catabolism, which is when the body consumes less energy than it takes in through food sources. While this process can burn fat stores, it also can eat away at muscle tissue using a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol is a stress response; an example of this is being chased by someone. Cortisol levels can be elevated during slow, long cardio sessions; examples of this would be doing over half an hour on treadmills, elliptical, or stationary bikes. According to the obesity Journal, high cortisol levels in the body contribute to metabolic syndrome, lean muscle mass breakdown, and an increase in abdominal obesity, which leads to an overall lower /slower resting metabolic rate. Furthermore, the increase in cortisol levels can also lead to bone loss.
The second type of primary metabolic activity is anabolism. Anabolism is the building up of muscle tissue; this occurs when the hormones testosterone and insulin are activated. During this process, you tend to consume more calories because your body is in a constant state of calorie burning, so you will notice increased calorie intake in order to feed the muscles and sustain your high activity level.
Why is increasing your metabolic rate important?
Aside from the things previously mentioned, the reason increasing your metabolic rate is so important is because it keeps you alive! You heard me right; it is the energy that is required to keep your brain functioning properly and take oxygen through your lungs; it ensures your kidneys are working properly, filtering water and waste. Furthermore, it keeps your liver running at full capacity and maintains contraction of all smooth muscle tissues; these are tissues of the heart and organs, and the last but not least, it keeps blood moving through your body, thus making sure that tissues are being repaired and replaced.
